People power keeps Burntisland's clock chiming
the bells in the burgh chambers have rang fer over 100 years..then cos one ferry louper (incomer),complains the council switch them aff.
Work to alter the chimes on a Fife town clock has been halted after uproar from the community.
Burntisland residents gave councillors an 1100-signature petition after a single objection regarding noise saw the chimes of the town's Burgh Chambers clock silenced last week.
An emergency motion at a meeting of the Kirkcaldy area committee, allied to the petition, was passed unanimously at Kirkcaldy's Town House — meaning that a consultation will take place before any permanent change is made.
Although this could mean that the chimes, which usually sound every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, will remain muted for now, campaigners hope that reinstating the traditional town soundtrack will not be too far away.
Petition organiser Morag Douglas told The Courier, "I am happy that the council are now taking notice and have realised that they can't just act without proper consultation.

Re: People power keeps Burntisland's clock chiming
Despite being a fixture of Hogmanay celebrations in the Fife town for more than 150 years, the famous clock is expected to remain silent on Friday night after a single objection regarding noise at night saw the chimes silenced last month.
At a meeting last week, council officers offered to alter the clock's mechanism so the chimes sound between 7am and 10pm.
However, with angry locals and councillors keen to see the chimes working 24 hours a day, that meeting ended without a resolution, with another meeting to take place next month.
Morag Douglas, a member of Burntisland Community Council, said those behind the protest are keen to keep the pressure on the council to make it clear to them the issue won't go away.
"A 'compromise' offer was made to switch it on during the day while the consultation takes place, but that was rejected as it is not a compromise, but is what we are fighting against, and also if we allow this it will be very difficult to get it changed," she explained.
"I also suspect that the work may have already been done to alter the chimes and the council are reluctant to pay to have it undone.
"No final decision was made and the meeting was adjourned to January.
"Consequently, the citizens of Burntisland will have no chimes to bring in the new year and are understandably very angry.
"It looks like we will be stuck in 2010 for some time to come."
She urged people who feel strongly about the issue to show support for the campaign by standing in front of the town clock at 7pm on Thursday.
i wish i could find oot who this ersehole is..i'd kick their erse a' the way tae Carter Bar!!!

pphew....glad you got a meeting over the clock...knowing that it will be chiming for all of you again...
i lived facing a huge clock/church...ST.THOMAS when i was younger
it drove me nuts at first....but then i got used to it...and i never heard it
after that...one thing was i never needed a clock...with this huge FACE
looking into our window.
they have now...ripped all the houses and shops down...and it still stands there ...in all its splendor....must check on how old it is....
where i now live....there isnt a clock...in site...but this place is only 200 years old.
i hope you feeling tick tock ...now clans..xx
